There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the border from neighboring Thailand, where casino wagering is prohibited. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a relatively tiny space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime spot, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few limitations requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; still, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and though visas are apparently needed to cross, there are ways around this, as is real of many border crossings.

The original Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat casino, features one hundred and fifty slot machine games and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of 150 slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slot machines and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and sixty six of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive resort and hotel compound that contains a number of comforts on top of the casino, which houses ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight table games.
